Tahini Stir Fry Sauce

The sauce was born when I imagined a spring stir-fry. The addition of Tahini gives the sauce a creamy texture and unique flavor. This is a nice change from peanut butter.

This sauce is well balanced, with a hint of fresh ginger, savory maple syrup, chili garlic sauce, and a hint of tamari. This sauce is perfect to make ahead and have on hand when you want to stir fry grains, vegetables, or noodles quickly. It only takes seven ingredients and one bowl. We’ll show you exactly how to do it.

How to make Tahini stir fry sauce

This nut-free sauce begins with a base of Tahini, which is a rich, creamy paste that tastes nutty and contains minerals like copper, manganese, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron, and zinc.

Maple syrup adds sweetness and balances out the acidity of lime juice and tamari, which adds umami/savory flavor.

The ginger and garlic give it a zing, while the chili garlic sauce gives it a little heat. It becomes a sauce when you add water.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Tahini (see our favorite tahini brands here)
  • 2 Tbsp of tamari or coconut aminos (or reduce maple syrup and use more coconut aminos).
  • Use 2-4 tablespoons of lime juice
  • Add more maple syrup to taste.
  • One large clove of garlic, minced
  • Ginger grated to 1 Tbsp
  • 1 1/2 to 2 tsp Chili Garlic Sauce
  • Use 1-3 tablespoons of hot water to thin

Instructions

  • Add hot water, 1 Tbsp (15 ml) at a time, to thin it out into a pourable sauce (we added 1 Tbsp (15 ml) as written //the amount needed will depend on the thickness of the Tahini). Add 1 Tbsp of hot water (15 ml at a time) to thin the sauce out. (We added 1 Tbsp as written in the recipe // amount needed depending on the thickness of the Tahini).
  • If necessary, adjust the taste by adding more Tahini to increase creaminess, more tamari to increase saltiness, more lime juice for acidity or sweetness, maple syrup or ginger for zing or heat, or additional tamari or tamari sauce.
  • Serve in stir-fry (with vegetables and grains). Fresh is best. Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. After refrigerating, add additional water. Not freezer-friendly.
